A map plugin and a map service are different things. The plugin adds a map to WordPress; the provider supplies map tiles, geocoding, places, or directions. A plugin can be free while its chosen map API has usage charges. Start with the kind of map your visitors need, then choose the tool and provider together.

WP Go Maps supports multiple map engines and can display marker-based maps in WordPress. Check the current free/premium feature split for the marker, filtering, and store-locator features you need. If you select Google Maps as the underlying service, expect Google Cloud setup and applicable billing; choosing a different supported engine changes those requirements.
Leaflet Map: lightweight mapping building blocks
Leaflet Map uses the Leaflet library and WordPress shortcodes for maps and markers. It can be a good fit for a simple map when you are comfortable configuring a tile source. Leaflet itself does not grant unlimited free map tiles: review the tile provider’s attribution and usage policy. The public OpenStreetMap tile servers, for example, are not a no-questions-asked production CDN for every workload.
MapGeo Interactive Geo Maps: clickable regions
MapGeo Interactive Geo Maps focuses on interactive geographical regions and data visualization. Choose it when visitors need to explore countries, states, or coverage territories. If the task is “show me directions to this shop,” a street-map plugin is usually clearer.
What does “free map plugin” really cost?
Google Maps Platform billing depends on the specific API or SKU and usage; do not rely on old claims about a fixed number of free map loads per day. Read the current pricing and set budget alerts or quotas if you use Google services. Other tile providers have their own limits, attribution rules, and commercial plans. Paid plugin features, geocoding, and staff time to maintain locations also belong in the cost estimate.
A practical implementation checklist
- List what visitors need: address, hours, directions, location search, service area, or pickup availability.
- Choose street map versus clickable region map. Do not install multiple plugins to answer one simple question.
- Check plugin maintenance, support, and free/premium limits in its official listing.
- Check the map-provider terms, API-key setup, attribution rules, quotas, and billing separately.
- Add a plain-text address, phone, and directions link near the map so the information remains useful if the map fails.
- Test keyboard navigation, mobile height, loading speed, and privacy/cookie behavior on the published page.
Which should you choose?
For one or a few locations, start with WP Go Maps if you want a visual plugin workflow; consider Leaflet Map if you prefer direct control over a simple map and tile source. For interactive region coverage, consider MapGeo. For a true WooCommerce store locator or delivery workflow, define the checkout and search requirements first, then look for a purpose-built integration.
A map is useful only if it helps a visitor complete a task. If your contact or location page still leaves people unsure what to do, request a three-point website review of the page itself.
